10 Famous Artists that Died

Dead artists

Since abandoning BgArt News Blog back in 2010 there have been a lot of great artists pass away. The two giants of paint, Lucian Freud and Cy Twombly were the biggest trees to fall. Here’s my little list of ten dead artists.

Cy Twombly Dies – April 25, 1928 – July 5, 2011 – American painter just hitting his stride in my opinion. If he had died 20 years ago I probably wouldn’t have thought much of him as a painter as I believe all his best work is his most recent work.

Antoni Tapies Dies – 13 December 1923 – 6 February 2012 – The famous Spanish artist was an art giant. I don’t love all of his work but I do love enough of it to think he is a great artist.

Lucian Freud Dies – 8 December 1922 – 20 July 2011 – Easily the best portrait painter working when he was alive! Did you know that he fathered at least 14 children? Some say there could be as many as 40 little Lucians running around, but everything is exaggerated in art.

Robert Hughes Dies – 28 July 1938 – 6 August 2012 – OK, he wasn’t an artist but he was a giant in the art world, even if a lot of people didn’t like him. I like him because he’s direct and says what he thinks, even if it offends the powerful. Watch him here on Youtube in the Business of Art where he talks to mega-collector Alberto Mugrabi.

Thomas Kinkade Dies – January 19, 1958 – April 6, 2012 – The self described “painter of light” sailed off into the sunset. He died on Good Friday 2012 after a night of too much alcohol and valium.

Mike Kelley Dies – October 27, 1954 – January 31, 2012 – American conceptual artist Mike Kelley died from an apparent suicide in 2012.

Richard Hamilton Dies – 24 February 1922 – 13 September 2011 – British artist and one of the fathers of pop art.

Jeffrey Smart Dies – 26 July 1921 – 20 June 2013 – Australian painter based in Italy. Outside of Australia he’s not so well known but he’s much loved and collected in Australia.

Margaret Olley Dies – 24 June 1923 – 26 July 2011 – Another Australian painter unknown outside of Australia (is there any other kind?). I can’t say her work does much for me but to criticize her would be like calling your grand mother awful names.

Louise Bourgeois Dies – 25 December 1911 – 31 May 2010 – Not long after I stopped posting in 2010 Louise Bourgeois died.

I’m sure I missed a bunch of artists, but the title of the post says Ten dead artists, so this is where I’ll stop.
