Paul Gauguin work estimated at 40 to 50 million
A work by Paul Gauguin at the upcoming Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern art auction is set to make between 40 and 50 million dollars.
I think art critic Robert Hughes got it right when he said "A fair price is the highest one a collector can be induced to pay." and also.. "Art prices are determined by the meeting of real or induced scarcity with pure, irrational desire, and nothing is more manipulable than desire."
"NEW YORK.- Sotheby’s evening sale of Impressionist and Modern Art on November 4, 2004 will include one of the finest works by Paul Gauguin to appear on the market, Maternité (II), painted in 1899 during the artist’s second Tahitian period."
