  Mark Rothko Essay
mark rothko photoThe arts writer for the Guardian, Jonathan Jones has wrote an interesting article about the abstract artist Mark Rothko. Anyone that is remotely interested in the artist should go have a read. It starts off with one of the most creative descriptions of death I've heard.
Feeding fury
"Mark Rothko was found on the morning of February 25 1970, lying dead in a wine-dark sea of his own blood. He had cut very deep into his arms at the elbow, and the pool emanating from him on the floor of his studio measured 8ft x 6ft. That is, it was on the scale of his paintings. It was, to borrow the art critical language of the time, a colour field." Jonathan Jones

I don't have the text in front of me, but this description of Rothko's sad end reads very like that of Lee Seldes, author of the interesting and thorough book on Rothko,"The Legacy of Mark Rothko." Seldes was the only writer who followed the legal course of the estate wrangling, an eye-opener to many of us. I like your blog, very interesting.

I havnt read a good artist biography for a while, so The Legacy of Mark Rothko has just been put on the "to read" list.

Other artist sucides which make one wonder about aesthetics and death will be found in Kiki's Paris in which the sucide of Pascin is described and in the materials accompanying the Arbus exhibition at the Met which quote from the autopsy of her body found, I believe in a bathtub.

i think the description of the death might actually be "borrowed" from the James E.B. Breslin biography, Mark Rothko. Breslin actually had access to the police reports and witness accounts, etc. in any event, a great read for those of us obsessed with Rothko.
