Danila Tkachenko’s ‘Restricted Areas’ project is a look at once important areas in Russia which are now deserted. Abandoned government projects, hidden cities, forgotten science, and empty buildings that were a part of a technological push forward. The cold Russian winter and the lens of Tkachenko have teamed up to remember these areas and make them beautiful. White is my favorite color

Everywhere I look lately I seem to come across amazing landscape paintings. The landscapes I love the most are those that can’t be mistaken for anything other than a painting. If it looks like a photograph of a landscape it’s probably better off being a photograph. John David Wissler’s landscape paintings are wonderful little painterly gems. They’re the sort of work I want to have around me at the moment as I need as much calm and beauty as I can find. I’m not sure if this post is going anywhere, but I was just thinking about how many extra layers of skin I have had to grow over the years to be able to deal with life. As an artist you have to be able to deal with criticism or you should never let anyone see your work, ever. As a business owner you have to be able to deal with rude customers. Weather Systems by Chris Langlois opens at the Olsen Irwin gallery in Sydney on the 20th of this month. I like his large realist works of the sea and clouds, they’re minimalist and make you ponder, just as the sea itself does. But I like his smaller, much looser landscape sketches much more. I was just thinking in the bathtub (which is where I solve the problems of the world) about music and painting. I was listening to random songs on the iPod and the songs were so ridiculously varied, from System of a Down to Beethoven and everything in between. Much like paintings, I love a really wide variety of works, from Bruegel to Hirst. But in both music and painting my absolute favorite works are those where the maker seems to be about to lose control. They’re emotionally intense, filled with extremes, and they’re begging you to react to them. They could be screaming with rage, quietly crying or on a spiritual high.. none of them are relaxed and comfortable though.
