Dora Maar Photographs Picasso’s Guernica

I have seen sketches and drawings leading up to and relating to Pablo Picasso’s giant Guernica painting, but I haven’t seen it photographed in stages. Henriette Theodora Marković, better known as Dora Maar captured the masterpiece from start to finish. I like how it evolves, even though it was a very planned painting, it still grew and changed as it progressed. Picasso thought of it as capturing the metamorphosis of a painting rather than simply recording the stages.Continue Reading

El Greco Painting Record

A bidding war between a Russian collector and an Indian collector saw the 3 to 5 million pound estimate of El Greco’s “Saint Dominic in Prayer” almost double to reach an auction record for the artist of £9,154,500 or about $14,000,000 USD.

Top 200 20th Century Artists?

The Times and Saatchi gallery have compiled 1,461,523 votes from the public to come up with a list of the 200 top artists of the 20th Century. It’s a method that has flaws as some artists will be missing and other artists will get more attention than they really deserve, but any list compiled by anyone is flawed as lists are an art rather than a science. They’re not meant to be taken too seriously.

Prado Museum on Google Earth

Google Earth is an amazing tool that just keeps getting better and it’s still FREE. Over the years I have spent hours looking down on our fascinating little planet with Google Earth.

Now Google has made it even more compelling for artists to download as they’re opening museums up and taking us inside. No longer content with looking down on art museums from above, they have zoomed in on paintings hanging on the walls. They have gone in armed with some amazing technology too, revealing every crack and brush stroke on each painting.Continue Reading

Pablo Picasso and His Collection in Brisbane

During my recent walkabout I was feeling artsick (kind of like being homesick, but it’s art that you miss) so I drove on to the city of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. Google Celebrates Diego Velazquez

The famous Spanish artist Diego Velázquez is on the Google homepage today. Google has appropriated the Spaniard’s Las Meninas from 1656 (The Maids of Honour.)

Famous Spanish Artist I don’t think Google has integrated their logo very well with the painting but I still love that they continue to celebrate artists in this way.
