Danila Tkachenko’s ‘Restricted Areas’ project is a look at once important areas in Russia which are now deserted. Abandoned government projects, hidden cities, forgotten science, and empty buildings that were a part of a technological push forward. The cold Russian winter and the lens of Tkachenko have teamed up to remember these areas and make them beautiful. White is my favorite color

I have been browsing the web for quadcopters and the aerial photography that can be taken with them and came across the story of Trey Ratcliff in Beijing. He was using his ‘New DJI Phantom 2 with Zenmuse H3-3d 3-axis Gimbal and Gopro Hero 3+ Black Edition‘ quadcopter to photograph the Forbidden City in China and was detained by Chinese authorities. Being the professional that I am, I just abandoned the blog for a few days while I wandered the streets of Sydney. I used to do it a lot more often during my pre-mortgage days and my pre-crap-earnings days, but now I’m forced to make this one little muddied puddle as interesting as I can. So I really appreciate the rare moments where I do escape, even if it’s just down to Sydney which is about an hour and a half drive. I caught up with some friends and never went into one single art gallery, which is usually the only reason I go to Sydney. I’m now feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world again! I seem to be mentioning animals quite a bit lately. When things get tough I usually retreat to nature, so it would make sense that if I’m blogging through a challenging period there will be more nature posts. I sometimes wonder why artists bother when I look at nature. We have nothing on her awesomeness! All we do is splash about in the bath while nature roars with all the might of the ocean (hat tip to Salvador!). The taxonomist Arthur Anker does a great job of capturing some of the smaller, more beautiful and interesting parts of nature with his photographs of bugs, frogs, crabs, and other creepy crawlies. As much as I love beaches and the ocean, I rarely ever go out into the water. I’m afraid of sharks, stinging jellyfish, fish with spikes in the sand, and rip currents! Everything is trying to kill you at the beach. My friend is a surfer and talks about sitting out there on his board while sharks calmly swim past. I’ll stick to the sand until I grow gills and sharp teeth

I really love this idea. If I wasn’t struggling to pay the mortgage and buy art supplies I would grab one. Fifty shares are being sold for $350 each. Your one share buys you 6 original, signed photographs to be commissioned by 6 different artists. So each work will be an edition of 50 (as there’s 50 share holders) and you’ll receive them over a period of 6 months (2 images every other month). You won’t know what the image will be but you’ll know who the photographers will be. The paparazzi are not really photographers, they’re not really people either, they’re more annoying mosquitoes than anything else. But people keep lapping up their voyeuristic wares and the paparazzi continue to put food on their tables. So they’re just giving us what we want and you can’t blame them for wanting to make a living. A guilty pleasure I admit to is when they capture the rich and powerful ruling elite of the world in compromising situations.
